Chinese Authorities Evict 80,000 Ahead of Summer Universiade Games

Authorities in China’s southern city of Shenzhen say they have evicted 80-thousand so-called “unstable” people from the area. They call it the “100-Days Social Security Campaign.” It was launched earlier this year, ahead of an international athletics event for university students, the Summer Universiade.

Local media report that people who are mentally ill, who don’t have proper ID, or who are considered “unstable” by the Chinese regime, were rounded up and sent away from the city. Authorities have not said where they’ve been sent.

Human rights lawyer Li Heping says the campaign violates Chinese law.

[Li Heping, Chinese Human Rights Lawyer]:
“The Constitution of the People’s Republic of China says everyone is equal before the law. Everyone’s lawful rights shall be protected by the law. So these 80-thousand people from Shenzhen, these so called special individuals, to send them away would be a violation of the constitution.”

One Shenzhen resident believes the purpose of the campaign is to prevent aggrieved people from speaking with foreign journalists.

[Mr. Sun, Shenzhen Resident]:
“Authorities are trying to remove people without proper jobs, because they can’t keep them here. These people often petition and they may attract foreign journalists. Authorities are using this unreasonable method to prevent interviews.”

Shenzhen authorities also plan to mobilize 500-thousand civilians to act as security watchmen. The Summer Universiade starts on August 12.
