Keith Taylor MEP-Letter to the Chief Procurator of the Shanghai about the imprisonment of Mr Guo Xiaojun
for the South East of England
Chief Procurator of the Shanghai
Municipal People’s Procuratorate,
WU Guangyu Jianchazhang,
Shanghaishi Renmin Jianchayuan,
648 Jianguo Xilu,
Monday 10th January 2011
I am writing to you about my concerns for Mr Guo Xiaojun, a former lecturer at Jiatong University in
Shanghai. Mr Guo Xiaojun was convicted solely on charges which relate to his practice of Falun
Gong, and based on a confession he says was extracted through torture. I am extremely
concerned to learn that each of Guo’s five lawyers dropped his case after allegedly being
threatened by local authorities and that Guo’s lawyer was not informed of the date of the appeal
hearing, which prevented Guo from having legal representation.
I therefore urge the Chinese authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Mr Guo
Xiaojun, as he is a prisoner of conscience, imprisoned solely because of his beliefs. I call on the
authorities to guarantee that Mr Guo Xiaojun is not subjected to torture or ill-treatment, and that he
is given any medical attention and treatment he may require.
I also urge the authorities to implement a full, thorough and impartial investigation into allegations
that Mr Guo Xiaojun was tortured in detention and bring those responsible to justice.
I look forward to receiving your prompt response.
